The most common problems with Ipe decking are soft spots (or splits), warping, splintering and cracks. If you have one or more of these problems, Ipe decking may not be the right solution for your home.
In this article I will list and describe the most common problems and the possible remedies. Hopefully by the time you are finished reading this, you will have an understanding of how to spot the signs of problems and what to do about them.
Soft Spots. Soft spots are often caused by splinters from split ends. When the wood is exposed to humidity over long periods it becomes weakened and splits become more likely.
Split ends usually cause the majority of hardwood decking problems, but there are exceptions. Ipe decking is not as susceptible to splits as Amish or other lower quality decking materials, enquire now.
Splinters are a problem that all Ipe decking owners are faced with, no matter what materials are used to construct the decking. Splinters are small pieces of wood (or sometimes metal) that break off from the board.
They are usually very easy to identify since they usually have a small dot in their center. However, splinters can be very dangerous if they lodge into your eyes or lungs, which is why they are particularly important to watch for.
Warping. Ipe decking is a porous material and depending on the climate it can become very vulnerable to changes in the weather. If the temperature of the climate is very cold, for instance, then rain or snow may damage the surface of the wood and cause it to expand and then contract, creating split ends.
Similarly, very hot weather can cause the wood to expand and then contract, creating wrinkles. Warping can also occur if the wood is exposed to very strong UV rays.
Dampness. The decking can become damp if it gets too much water, either from rain or from water draining out of broken or cracked pipes. This can cause the wood to swell and this can cause split ends, mould and mildew if it is left in the damp for long periods of time.
Although condensation can also cause the same problems, it tends to evaporate more quickly and so does not leave as much of a damp feeling.
These are just some of the most common problems with the decking to look out for. Of course, there are many more such as rotting spots where the sealant has been leaking over time, uneven boards which will make walking on them difficult, splinters and warping.
However, if you are experiencing any of these problems, ipe decking may be right for you and there are ways to prevent them from happening.
If you are having trouble deciding on what deck to use, take a trip to your local supplier and let them know what you want so that they can help advise you and get you the best decking solution for your needs.
